Gifted
Daily painting of the horse. Abstract equine paintings by artist Melissa Mason
I might be a little late to realize this, but I just finished a painting that really spoke to me. As I stood there, admiring it, I found myself in an internal dialogue—reflecting on how important it is to step aside and allow the process to flow naturally. It’s in those moments, when I get out of my own way, that the most beautiful parts come through.
In that quiet reflection, I offered my gratitude to the muse—thanking it for the dance, for the gift of inspiration. It’s a mysterious and profound experience, this dance with the unexplainable, where I’m able to gather these gifts and bring them back to share with the world.
I believe that’s what being truly gifted means: stepping into a space of openness, receiving something far greater than myself, and then sharing it. Today, I understand—I am truly gifted.

Day 9 into my exploration of these daily paintings of the horse
Something a little different today-a value study.
Challenged myself to work in only black and white and focus on values. A little yellow accidently sneaked its way in there, but is barely perceptible. I also approached the drawing differently on this piece. Instead of drawing in the subject first, I laid down a simple value wash and carved out the image with tonal values.

Fame Escorting Pegasus
PEGASOS (Pegasus) was an immortal, winged horse which sprang from the neck of the beheaded Gorgon Medousa (Medusa). It was tamed by Bellerophon who rode it into battle against the fire-breathing monster known as the Khimaira (Chimera). Later the hero attempted to fly to heaven but Zeus caused the horse to buck throwing him back down to earth in disgrace. Pegasos winged his way on to Olympos where he became the thunderbolt-bearer of Zeus.
Pegasos was commemorated amongst the stars as the constellation of the same name. Its rising marks the arrival of spring and, in Greece, of seasonal thunderstorms.
Pegasos' name means either "of the spring" from the Greek word pêgê, or "sprung forth" from the word pêgazô. The first alludes to the steed's connection with various springs, and the latter to its birth from the Gorgon's neck
"Fame Escorting Pegasus” by Eugène-Louis Lequesne. 1875.

Finding Peace
Sometimes I feel like making horse art is kind of a pointless endeavor. Every day, out in the studio mixing my colors, and getting lost in my own little universe. All while the world outside is going mad.
But what should I do? I should be doing more, I tell myself.
I am reminded of this quote from Einstein-“We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them”.
So what is the answer? It seems more government, laws, wars, etc….don’t seem to really solve things.
This leads me to creativity and nature, this powerful force that enlivens us-the reason we are here experiencing this life we have been gifted.
I have to remind myself that life “is” a gift, that there is so much more to this physical reality we are experiencing. So while I am out in the studio communing with this “muse”, I return with small tokens of this meeting.
To shine a little light into the darkness.
Hope you enjoy my newest piece.
Peace
Melissa
